Originally founded in 1916 by Lama Gulu, the monastery has strong spiritual ties to the Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet. This resilent structure has survived both a devastating earthquake in 1934 and a massive fire in 1989. Rebuilt with global support, it continues to serve as a vital spiritual hub. For trekkers on the Everest trail, stopping here to listen to the monks chant against the backdrop of towering peaks is an unforgettable experience.
Nestled above the picturesque village of Junbesi in Nepal’s Solu region, Thubten Choling Monastery is one of the country’s most significant centers of Tibetan Buddhism. This monastery is hidden in the folds of hill above Junbesi and is home of hundreds of monks and nuns. It lies off the main trekking route, but people still choose to go there and enjoy the peaceful vibes. There are very few visitors, which makes it one of the least visits and most beautiful monasteries in the Himalayas. Thubten Choling is stillness with no audience at all. Pungyen Gompa is one of the oldest, small, remote Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in the Manaslu region. Situated at an elevation of 4,000m between Samagaon and Shyala, Pungyen Gompa is believed to honor Lord Pungyen, protector deity of Mount Manaslu. The monastery offers trekkers a peaceful, remote setting marked by fluttering prayer flags, weathered stone walls, and sacred stillness. It also serves as an acclimatization stop for trekkers to sustain themselves in the environment of Manaslu. It is regarded as one of the deeply meaningful attributes for the people living in Manaslu.
