Solo Trekking in the Restricted Area of Nepal.

Over the last two years, we have heard from countless solo trekkers, all keen on travelling to the Nepal’s Restricted Area and were disappointed when the government said no as it required at least two trekkers to issue the permit of restricted area. However, it’s no longer a problem, Nepal government just announced that a solo traveler can travel to restricted area from now on. If you love traveling alone and would not want any companion with you then the door to restricted area is open for you. No compromise. No joining someone else’s group. No begging a friend to tag along just to meet a quota. The restricted area is just opened to you.

On March 23rd 2026, the Department of Immigration (DIM) has just revised its trekking permit policy for restricted areas, allowing individual foreign tourist to obtain permit that were previously issued only to groups of two or more. The decision was made after the sustained lobbying by the Trekking Agency’s Association of Nepal (TAAN) and other tourism stakeholders, who argued that the restriction on solo traveler was an obstacle to gain more tourist to visit Nepal.

# What People Must Understand is:

As the government has allowed solo traveler this doesn’t mean you can travel all alone on your own. You must travel to restricted area through a travel agency and a legal government license holder guide should be with you throughout the trek. You’re still not allowed to travel to the restricted area without a guide. The only thing that is changed is a solo foreigner can trek to “Restricted Area” but must have a guide with them. Without a legally registered travel agency and a license holder guide, you are prohibited to travel to the restricted area.

# After this Rule Where Can You Trek Solo?

  • Upper Mustang
  • Manaslu Circuit
  • Tsum Valley
  • Nar Phu Valley
  • Upper Dolpo
  • Kanchenjunga

But as mentioned before, you can only travel if you book through a registered travel agency and a government license holder guide must be with you through out the trek.
