The Himalayas are something we all admire deeply, and they never stop surprising us with their beauty. While it is a bit difficult to reach to the Himalayas but the main meaning of beauty is hidden in their towering peaks. The silence, peace and nature are everything Himalayas offer to us. Although Himalayas may appear to stand alone at the top of the world, in reality, they are not all alone. Despite being situated at such high altitudes, there is a rich presence of life that shares this space with them.
These companions include animals living up there at that height in extreme cold, walking through snow and looking after the great Himalayas. These animals are the important part of the ecosystem. It’s not a new thing; animals have been there from the ages ago and are the important factor to balance the eco-system of Himalayas.
These are the animals that survive when the oxygen is thin and temperature drops far below freezing. Only a very few numbers of animals are able to survive at this condition. Some of the animals like Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Blue Sheep (Bharal) and Yak have evolved over time to live in some of the harshest conditions in Himalaya, making them a vital part of the mountain ecosystem.
While the Himalayas are the home of powerful and strong animals who are familiar with high altitudes, many smaller mammals play just as important role. The Himalayan Pika, a small rabbit-like creature, living between the rocks is one of the smallest mammals living in high altitude Himalayas. It is one of the main food sources for larger predators like snow leopard. Himalayan Marmot is another animal that is often witnessed by the trekkers at the Himalayas. And one of the rare animals, Red Panda also lives in such high altitude.
Its not just animals who survives the cold, the height and the thrill. There are many birds who enjoy such thrill. Who fly over the top of Himalayas, who overlook after the Himalayas, and is the ultimate guide who knows everything. The national bird of Nepal, Lophophorus is often spotted in places like the Annapurna and Langtang regions, with its multicolor feathers, Lhopophorus make the journey of the trekkers more beautiful. Another bird that flies above the Himalayas is, the Bearded Vulture, one of the largest birds in the world. It soars over high ridgelines, playing a crucial role as nature’s cleanup crew. Other birds like the Himalayan Griffon Vulture and Snow Partridge also lives in the Himalayas and often common sights for trekkers, especially in the high passes of Everest and Manaslu.
Life above the clouds isn’t only about animals, it is also about what grows there. Nepal’s National flower, Rhododendron grows all over the forest in the Himalayas. Every season, m the forest at Himalayas is filled with red and pink rhododendron. This makes the trail of Annapurna and Everest more beautiful than any other trek. Above the tree line, hardy alpine meadows and medicinal herbs like Yarsagumba grow in a condition that would seem impossible for any living thing to survive.
Every creature living in Himalayas, either small or big, is a part of a finely balanced system. Each creature depends upon another one for survival of their life. And Himalayas has provided them a perfect shelter. It’s a complete package, remove one thread, and the whole fabric begins to unravel. This is why the presence of these animals isn’t just a beautiful detail for trekkers to notice, it’s a sign of how healthy, or fragile, the Himalayan ecosystem truly is.
With such unique ecosystem the journey to these place sounds so amazing. Sadly, this delicate balance is under threat. Climbing change is pushing the snowline higher, shrinking the habitats these species depend on. Also, human encroachment, illegal hunting and unregulated tourism affects these species. With each passing year the species are reducing and ecosystem of Himalayas is dying. Conservation efforts across Nepal, including community led programs in the Annapurna and Kanchenjunga Conservation Areas, are working to protect these species, but they need continue awareness and support to succeed.
